Three of these awards are open for public nomination.
- Ngā Tohu Hautūtanga Auaha Toi – Making a Difference Award - Recognises leadership and outstanding contribution to the development of new directions in Māori art.
- Ngā Manu Pīrere - Recognises an emerging artist showing promise and potential in their chosen artform.
- Te Tohu Iho Pūmanawa - Recognises the contribution of a Māori artist with the lived experience of disability to the standing, and standard of Māori arts in New Zealand and/or globally.
Who can be nominated
To be a nominee you need to:
- be a tangata whenua Māori artist working across one or more artforms (either customary or contemporary)
- be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident
- have a track-record of excellence and achievement and show potential for contributing to the further development of ngā toi Māori in New Zealand
- not be a previous recipient of the award in the same award category. See all previous award recipients

How to make a nomination
- Check that the artist meets the award category criteria listed above. You can only nominate one artist for each award category. You may also want to prepare or gather support material, including letters of support or endorsement, at this point.
- Complete and submit the online Nomination Form - it will automatically be sent to Creative New Zealand. Ensure you submit this by 1pm on Monday 27 June 2022. Note, no late nominations or late support material will be accepted.
- Email any supporting material to TeWakaToiAwards@creativenz.govt.nz (include the nominee name in the subject line). All supporting material needs to be within one email per nomination. Ensure you email this by 1pm on Monday 27 June 2022.
- To nominate another artist for another award category complete another nomination form and email any support material.
